    How We Work
Darrin Salt, Founder of Salt Technology Consulting

How we work

It all starts with you. Whether you are dealing with a challenge, want to improve the way you work or you’re looking for solutions to help your business grow, your next step is to reach out to us for a discovery call.

We’ll start by listening. We’ll ask questions. We may even challenge some of your thinking. For projects, we’ll then put a discovery phase proposal together outlining how we can help.

The discovery phase is designed to gather the information, unearth answers and find any hidden problems that could derail a project.

If you have any questions, we’ll get those addressed and then we’ll set some timelines for the work we’ll be doing for you. Our consultants are flexible, but we will also set expectations from you, including the provision of information we need to help you. And if the work involves project management, we’ll keep the entire team on-track.

The discovery phase is a fixed piece of work. It’s designed to be the building block for a project, but its not the project delivery. It’s a vital tool to get everyone ready. To hit the ground on day one. To remove unknowns. To determine budget and timeline.

The end goal is to deliver the results you are looking, and even exceed them. Whether our work is a report, a new system, process, or a specific project, it will be delivered on time and on budget. If something you request is experimental, we’ll be very honest at the start. Nothing in life is certain, but we don’t believe in unnecessary risk taking either.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I need consultancy or project management in a very sensitive/confidential area. What assurances can you give.

A: Salt Technology Consulting will not request any more information than is necessary to carry out our work. That information will be stored in encrypted storage and only your consultant and the members of your team approved by you will have access to it. When the work is completed, handed over, and approved, all copies of interim data we used will be destroyed. We are also happy to sign a NDA prior to commencing any work or sharing any information.

Q: How will I know the costs for the consultancy or project management?

A: Our proposal will outline all the consultancy charges and expected budget. Typically, we will either give you a fixed quote for a piece of work, or set out time related charges for a specific period, thereby capping the cost. In general, we are happy to discuss price capping, staged payments and other arrangements for larger projects. We will also require your cooperation in keeping to budget. For example, if we set aside time to complete work that requires information or cooperation from your team and that is not forthcoming, our time would still be chargeable.

Q: Will we always have the same consultant?

A: The consultant or project lead who you meet and is assigned to you will always be your point of contact and liaise with you during any work we carry out. Depending on the nature of the consultancy or project, they may well bring in additional subject matter expertise as outlined in the proposal or determined in a discovery phase.

Q: What methods of project management do you use?

A: For very small projects, we would typically use a waterfall based project management approach. We do set some restrictions on the types of project we’ll do this for – they must last no longer than four weeks, be a single, discreet piece of work and involve no more than three full-time people, including your consultant.

For anything outside of those parameters, we use an Agile project management methodology. Agile project management breaks the project down into chunks, known as “Sprints”, each with set deliverables, reporting and accountability. This results in both rapid delivery and continuous improvement. Although Agile was originally created for software development, its flexibility makes it suited for almost every project.
